Burning Slumber Outbreak
#11
Is is possible that another horse could be found? I think it wise that Bahiyya has someone ride along with her. Or, barring that, Saree is pretty small (and a scout), would she be too much weight for the horse, if both she and Bahiyya are agreeable? If we can find another horse either Thorfinn or Symon or...Rc's char...he's pretty small too.

We can't forget Thorfinn and Crask's friction. John, Crask has revealed himself to be a Kobold, how would the real Thorfinn react?

A few horses can be spared since Paendley is an agricultural settlement with a variety of livestock, and sits along a trade route. I believe that it would make sense if Saree accompanies Bahiyya , possibly riding along on the same horse if they travelled lightly (uncomfortable for an extended and forced ride, but still doable). Since a small party travels faster, I will retroactively allow another rider or two ride along. The additional characters may also broaden the options available to the party once the fate of the merchants becomes known...

I think that Thorfinn would probably help maintain the quarantine as a guard, and act to bring back the few villagers who try to flee on a few occasions. This would become particularly necessary when Dassell, the yeoman bowman, fell ill with the ealry stages of Burning Slumber.

The herbs gathered proved valuable for bolstering patients' health, but were not abundant enough for everyone. Olotte (Gwenet's mother) regains consciousness after a day of treatment, and recovers after an additional day of bed rest... due is great part to the quick treatment of her illness (stage 2 was the worse she experienced). Those who recover without Remove Disease will have immunity to the Burning Slumber, and some of those that recover will also be able to help with the burden of treating the others. The quick action of the party and village officials greatly minimized the impact of the outbreak, limiting the sick to 18 villagers out of a total population of 117.

As far as the friction between Thorfinn and Crask, we'll assume that they avoid each other for the time being.

Saree would be amendable to accompanying Bahiyya, as it would be safer for two to go than one given the situation. And once they reach the campsite, she can attempt to track whomever looted the spot.

18?  Even with spells and assistants that might be too many people for Kearse to handle.  Is he able to manage all those people?  I hope we didn't have to expend too many charges from our Staff of Curing.

Thanks for the replies. Bahiyya is grateful for the company; Saree would be an excellent choice for an Away Team mission to find the merchants. If anyone else wants to come that's fine; although remember that we need to leave plenty of people at the village too.

If Bahiyya and Saree come across the dead merchants' camp as described above, the logical course of action would seem to be for Saree to attempt to track down the looters. The results of that would probably determine what we do next -- in most cases, that would probably involve one or both of us riding back to Paendley to report our findings to the party and choosing a course of action.

If the looters are in some lair nearby, we could track them down and cure them (or, if need be, kill them if they aren't dead already). If they have gone on to the next village, then (from Bahiyya's perspective) we'd need to formulate a course of action to contain the spread at that village and minimize damage there.

Of course, other party members may have other perspectives, which is fine. Sleepy

We will have to admonish all these towns and villages to let professional adventurers enter their newly revealed cavern systems. Burning Slumber is a small price for the Sod family and this town to pay for trying to adventure without a license. Wink

Eighteen patients would definitely be overwhelming to handle. While the illness is extremely fast acting and contagious, the patients did not fall ill all at once. As mentioned earlier, you may only provide long term care to six patients at a time. However, your expertise would allow you to triage the patients according to severity, where you could delegate less serious cases to those assisting you. Vira also has some level of expertise (not as great as you, but fairly close), and doubles the load to 12 patients at a time. Barring death, the Burning Slumber will run its course within 24hrs for a patient under your care. The two severely critical cases that occurred outside of your care would have been cured using the staff, taking a total 6 charges.

Using the staff to remove potential disease from Bahiyya and Saree for their ride out to catch the merchants takes another 6 charges.

Having Saree accompany you makes sense. Although the option for others to accompany you is available, it would leave the rest of the party without valuable support in containing the outbreak; although the party members who remain in Paendley are at risk of repeated exposure, there are precautions that could be taken to minimize the danger.

Based on the time elapsed, the amount of rain, and the terrain, Saree would determine that a 3-5 sets of shod footprints entered and moved throughout the campsite, then led the horses and cart away. They did not appear to follow the road, but Saree found a few separate sets further down that appear to double back the way they came. Saree is able to track the looters to the abandoned cart further into the woods, where it appears they were met by a larger group. The trail then becomes cold in the thick of the woods.
